50+ Support Champions

We have been training people aged over 50 years-old, who have past or present problematic alcohol or drug use, to become our 50+ Support Champions. Funded by Bristol Ageing Better (BAB), our Champions started as a group of older people who regularly attended our 50+ Crowd social group who wanted to return a hand helping to support other people overcome similar problematic alcohol or drug use.

When I came out of detox, a peer support worker took me out for coffee, and that changed and saved my life, it took me out of my depression.

The key element is that people with problematic alcohol or drug use are supported by people of a similar age. Our volunteers have undergone 6 weeks of training that has given them the confidence and tools to make home visits to people facing similar issues who are in earlier stages of recovery. The Champions are now building a network of support available across our services.
