Mentoring Programme

BDP's Mentoring Programme is part of the Family Support Service, and offers one-to-one mentoring for young people aged 8 - 16 who are affected by parental alcohol or substance misuse.

Could you make a positive impact on a young person's life? if so please read on:

What is involved?

For the Young Person

  • The young person will be matched with a volunteer mentor.
  • The mentor and young person will meet on a weekly basis.
  • Mentors will work with the young person to plan and participate in activities. Ideally some of these activities will be things that the young person can then carry on with beyond the duration of the project (e.g. attending a drama group/sports club etc.)
  • Mentors may also use this time to engage with the young people in helping with home-work/doing relevant worksheets.
  • Occasional social events will allow the young person to come together with other young people on the mentoring programme.

For the Family

  • Parents will be engaged by the Family Support Service. Ideally being seen fortnightly by a Family Support Worker. A minimum requirement is that they are seen every three months through the mentoring review process.
  • Parents will also be encouraged to participate in some group activities.

For the Mentor

  • Mentors will receive five weeks of induction training
  • They will also receive monthly supervision, both on an individual and group basis, and will also be expected to check-in by phone with the Mentoring Coordinator during the initial weeks of their engagement.
  • Mentors are asked to commit for a minimum of one year.
