Counselling Volunteers

There are opportunities to volunteer on BDP's Counselling Service for people who meet the following criteria:

  1. To be working towards obtaining a Diploma in Counselling / Foundation Degree in Counselling or equivalent (or already qualified).
  2. Willing to undertake training in Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and be able to work in a way that is compatible with these approaches.
  3. To have a minimum of one years counselling experience. Or to have a minimum of one years experience working with clients face to face, within the substance misuse field or a related field e.g. homelessness, domestic violence, probation etc.
  4. To be available to commit to working as a Counselling Volunteer for a period of a minimum of one year post induction / training.
  5. To be available to work for a minimum of one day per week (7 hours). This could be split over two days (evening and Saturday morning sessions are also available).

This service offers structured counselling to service users, with identified goals, for a period of 6 sessions at a time. We also offer counselling to partners, parents and other family members who are concerned about someone else's drug use.
